A Roofing Job Done Right

Roofing

When you hire a roofing contractor, you don’t want missing materials, shoddy work, or for it to take way longer than it should. You want a roofing job done right. But what makes a roofing job “right,” and how do you know if it was done right or not?

How Do You Know If a Roof Is Done Right?

The truth is, unless you are a professional roofer, you won’t know if your roof was done right. Trust is the most important ingredient in your new roof. Since you are probably not a roofer you must trust the company you hired will use the best materials, have properly trained workers and not cut corners during the process.

If you’ve gotten a roofing job done, you’re probably tempted to take a look at it and make sure everything was done properly. But what can you look for to make sure everything is in order? Here are some signs that your roof was properly installed:

  • A Uniform Appearance: Your roof should have a uniform, symmetrical appearance. If your roof was repaired, a good sign is that you cannot see where a repair was done.Properly Installed Flashing: Flashing is an incredibly important part of your roof. Flashing is installed near chimneys, vents, and skylights, and “drip edge flashing” is installed at open roof edges. If the flashing is missing, or you notice that the flashing is pulling away from the roof, something went wrong.
  • Proper Nailing and Overhang: A roofing job done right should have materials properly nailed down without excess overhang. The edges of your shingle roof should hang over the edge around 3/4 inches, or 1 – 2 inches for a tile roof.Excess overhang or not enough overhang and improper nailing can lead to damage, leaks, and shingles/tiles coming loose.
  • A Clean Jobsite: If a team of roofers leaves your home looking worse than before, with materials or debris lying around or your landscaping damaged, that’s a sign that maybe they weren’t so professional after all. A properly-installed roof will look better than it did before, with no signs that the roofers were just there.

DIY or Hire a Pro?

It’s definitely tempting to “do it yourself” when it comes to your roof, especially if the cost of a roofing job seems exorbitant. But is it better to DIY – or hire a pro? The truth is, it’s almost always better to hire professional roofers. Owner repairs often add costs as improper repairs have to be removed prior to correction.

Roofing is dangerous work, and if you haven’t been trained and don’t have professional gear, the chance of getting hurt while trying to fix your roof is too high to be worth it. In a worst case scenario, you could end up sustaining an injury, and lose money and precious time. Better safe than sorry – always hire a contractor when your roof needs work.

Hire the Right Roofing Contractor

If you want the job done right, the first step is hiring the right roofing contractor. But how do you know which company is the right one? There are many things to look for. Do some research on them online to see what their reviewers say; schedule an estimate and be ready to ask them plenty of questions, including whether they are fully licensed and insured, how long they have been in business, and how the procedure will work; and do your due diligence by checking any information they gave you.
