Roof Leak Repair Overview

Roof Repair

Dealing with a leaky roof can be a nightmare, especially when it’s causing problems inside your home. If you’re dealing with a leaky roof and looking for ways to repair it, you’re in luck. In this post, we’ll give you a complete roof leak repair overview so you can get that leaky repaired before the heavy rains arrive this summer!

Signs of a Leaky Roof

One of the most obvious signs of a leaky roof is water dripping into your home. But some other signs might not be as noticeable. These hidden signs can help you catch a leak before any water gets into your house. They include:

  • Water spots on your ceilings or walls.
  • Wood rot or water staining at exterior overhangs.
  • Damaged, cracked, warped, or missing tiles or shingles.
  • Damaged flashing.

Why Does My Roof Leak in Heavy Rain?

If your roof is only leaking sporadically, especially in heavy rain, this may point to a more significant problem. Leaks during heavy rain aren’t always linked to issues with your roof. Plumbing or AC issues, metal corrosion, and poor ventilation can all cause a roof to leak during heavy rains. The best thing you can do to avoid this is to be proactive and get your roof checked before the heavy rain season hits to prevent any damage to your home.

How Do You Repair a Leaky Roof?

Sometimes, you can fix more minor roof problems by yourself, but that’s like putting a band-aid on a cut that needs stitches — it’s only temporary. The best way to repair a leaky roof is to hire a roofing contractor. This ensures that your roof will be well-prepared for heavy rains and safeguard against future issues. A roofing contractor can also do a complete evaluation of your roof and let you know if your roof has any other issues.

What is the Most Common Cause of Roof Leaks?

Roof leaks can occur due to a variety of different factors. Some of the most common causes of roof leaks are:

  • Broken or slipped tiles. Broken tiles allow stormwater to flow under the tiles which will prematurely deteriorate the waterproof underlayment and wood decking.
  • Improperly installed pipe flashings.     Base flanges on pipe flashings are to capture stormwater from above and shed water onto tiles below. If improperly formed stormwater drains under tiles and deteriorates the underlayment over a period of time.
  • Poorly installed skylights. Skylights that weren’t correctly installed aren’t sealed to keep water out. This usually happens because the installer did not follow the skylight manufacturer’s installation instructions carefully.
  • Neglect. Not properly caring for your roof can cause problems over time. Valleys must be kept clean of debris for proper drainage, broken tiles replaced, and other defective issues corrected. That’s why we recommend getting a yearly roof inspection, especially before any expected periods of bad weather!
